The life and work of former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright reads as an ironic admonishment to diplomats and politicians now handling events in Eastern Europe.
Her story, like that of too many other European refugees, is currently being replayed over and again.
Albright, who has just died from cancer aged 84, was born in Prague, former Czechoslovakia and her family fled to the UK to escape Nazi Europe and then on to the United States to flee Communism.
A tribute in the Mail Online notes: "Albright was a member of the National Security Council and pushed for NATO expansion eastward into the former Soviet bloc and helped lead the NATO bombing campaign in 1999 to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo".
Her strength of character makes present NATO officials appear like weak, vacillating fools.
I wish we could roll back the clock and have her in Washington DC now.
As a side note, it should be recalled that although raised as a Roman Catholic who converted to the Episcopal Church when she married, Albright was of Jewish stock and I am sure that heritage informed much of her life and work.
